WHAT'S ON
The estate dates back to 1368 but it wasn’t until 1405 that the first castle was built on the land. The castle’s heritage is present to this day with the remains of two original medieval towers located on either side of the castle which are now home to two fabulous chestnut trees. Remnants of the old wall are also present around the property, and the original moat is still present at the front of the grounds overlooking the castle.
After being burnt down by the Republicans in 1794, it was rebuilt in 1803 where it stood until it suffered an accidental fire at the end of the 20th century.
In 1999 it was purchased by its current owners who fell in love with the estate and its region. They willingly took on the challenge not only of such a huge estate with its woods and gardens but also of a house that was barely standing. Despite all this, the current owners saw the property's beauty and potential and renovations that took 18 months have restored it to its original beauty.
The castle is furnished with a variety of different antiques which were hand-picked to match and recreate the original style of the house.
In 2016, the gatehouse, known as the Maison des Vignes, was fully restored having been left derelict by its previous tenants; a local lady and her goat. Current owners also used that time to install a swimming pool within the grounds. As the area is located within a marshland, the pool was cleverly designed to be raised and allow for a maximum depth of 160cm to allow the residents to cool off during the hot summer months.
In 2020, the owner’s daughter and her partner took on the task of renovating the Canardière. In 2022, Château Chevreuil opened its doors to the public, becoming available for holiday rentals and welcoming its very first guests.
