The rise of Muscadet and its regional importance

Muscadet is crisp, dry white wine made from the Melon de Bourgogne grape, grown almost exclusively in the "Vignoble Nantais" (Nantes vineyards) along the Atlantic coast. For many years, Muscadet was seen as a cheap, rather unexciting wine that was mainly enjoyed by locals. However, recent improvements in winemaking techniques and vineyard management have elevated it to a wine of finesse and complexity that you can find all over the world and on some of the most curated wine lists.

Winemakers now focus on terroir expression, aging on lees (sur lie), and sustainable practices, which bring out richer textures and more nuanced flavours. These developments have helped Muscadet gain a new reputation as the best muscadet for wine lovers seeking quality without the high price tag of other French white wines like Sancerre or Chablis.

Why Muscadet pairs perfectly with local gastronomy

The Loire-Atlantique region is famous for its seafood, shellfish, and fresh produce. Muscadet’s bright acidity, mineral notes, and light body make it an ideal companion to oysters, mussels, grilled fish, and goat cheese. Its refreshing character cuts through the richness of butter-based dishes and complements the subtle flavours of local recipes.

Visitors staying at Château Chevreuil can enjoy tasting sessions that highlight these pairings, offering a true taste of the region’s culinary heritage. The wine’s affordability also means guests can indulge in multiple bottles without worrying about the cost, making it a practical choice for both casual and serious wine enthusiasts.

Did you know?

Many years ago, long before the current owners of Château Chevreuil came into the pictures, the fields outside and around the estate were filled with vines that grew Melon de Bourgogne. In fact, the name of the Maison des Vignes house comes from the fact that is overlooked the vineyards. Sadly, back then the climate was not as warm and the flat nature of the land made it hard for drainage. This resulted in the wine being one of the reasons Muscadet had such a bad reputations. Although the vines are gone and have given way to fields and crops, the old outbuildings of the estate did use to house the wine press. There are even a few old empty bottles in the ruined parts of the estate, with remnants of what once was, a not very good winery!
